Paul Morrison has been commissioned by the DLR to create a new permanent artwork for the Drew Road entrance to London City Airport station. The artwork will form part of the wider enhancement of the entrance area by Adams & Sutherland architects (including landscaping, lighting and public realm improvements).
The DLR selected Paul Morrison for the commission from a shortlist of artists. The panel were inspired by his previous work and by his suggested approach for the Drew Road commission. This included a proposal to work with local schoolchildren in order to develop ideas for the artwork.
In partnership with the Drew Primary school, the artist devised and led workshops with Year 5 pupils. This involved introducing the pupils to his work and inviting them to create their own botanical artwork studies of flora and fauna discovered within the school grounds.
The artist intends to develop his design for the artwork using the pupil’s drawings and other imagery as source material. This will be realised as a wall-based artwork within the entrance tunnel to London City Airport station.
The artwork will be installed in summer 2009.
The artist and DLR would like to thank Staff and Pupils of Drew Primary school for their support and participation in the workshops.
